Mike McCormick is a 1981 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Commerce and Business Administration where he graduated with honors. Mike attended Southern Illinois University School of Law in Carbondale, Illinois where he graduated magna cum laude in 1984. In law school, Mike worked as a law clerk in a private law firm, worked as a legal writing teaching assistant at the law school and served as student articles editor for the Southern Illinois University Law Journal.
After graduating from law school, Mike opened his own law practice in southern Illinois concentrating in the practice areas of business law, real estate, estate planning, municipal law and civil litigation. In 1988, he was elected to a four year term as Johnson County, Illinois State's Attorney. In that capacity, Mike was responsible for the prosecution of felonies, misdemeanors and traffic matters. In addition, as State’s Attorney, Mike represented Johnson County, Illinois on all legal matters.
In 1992, Mike was hired by the Illinois Department of Transportation as a property acquisition specialist.
In 1994, Mike worked for Governor Jim Edgar's re-election campaign and in addition to serving as a senior advisor for the campaign, was responsible for the campaign in the 30 southernmost counties of Illinois. In 1995, Governor Edgar asked Mike to serve on his Senior Staff until the Governor's retirement in January 1999. In addition to his responsibilities as a senior advisor to the Governor, Mike oversaw Governor Edgar’s schedule, briefings, advance team and travel. Mike also served as Governor Edgar’s liaison with local government officials in 96 of the 102 counties of Illinois.
Mike served as a member of the Illinois State Labor Relations Board and the Local Labor Relations Board from 1999 until 2002. In 1999 he served for a time as Chairman of both boards.
Mike's areas of concentration include residential and commercial real estate law, business and corporate law, estate planning and probate. Mike also continues to work with Governor Edgar at the Institute of Government and Public Affairs at the University of Illinois. Mike is a member of the Champaign County Bar Association, the Illinois Bar Association and an affiliate member of the Champaign County Association of Realtors.
